So here's a question...is Maul still technically a Sith Lord?

I know the Rule of Two says that there can only be two and Sidious replaced Maul with Dooku it seemed like Maul was dead...but does that mean that Maul is no longer Darth Maul?

Did Darth Bane ever write down a contingency situation for something like this? Otherwise, why is Sidious keeping Maul alive if Maul's very breath is a living breech in the Rule of Two?

Technically Sidious never trained Maul as a full Sith. He let Maul believe he was being trained as such, but he was basically just an assassin- like Ventress. He isn't and never truly was a Sith Lord. Maul from his start was always a third wheel. Sidious began training him while he was still an apprentice, before he killed his master.

I was kinda bummed by this episode, Maul and his brother have been one of the best aspects of this season (even if I have a hard time accepting Maul surviving his duel with Kenobi at the end of Phantom Menace). Maul was cunning and creepy and badass, and his brother and apprentice Savage was a force to be reckoned with as well, sad to see Savage go, and sad to see Maul go from being the best bad guy this season to begging for mercy at Palpatine's feet >_<

Kinda ruins Maul's credibility and image as a villain after bringing him down that low after his biggest victory.

I'd say poor Maul.. but he kinda deserved it. He knew what Palpatine could and would do if he caught him before he had Savage ready to actually seriously try overthrow Palpatine. I mean, Palpy raised him. :p

The guy who did Palpatine's voice, Ian Ambercrombie throughout the Clone Wars movie and seasons died a year ago, but he managed to finish his epic voice for the fight.

I'd love to know how Palpatine explains his absence to the senate or anyone else who asks where he was.

He would not have been gone for too long, perhaps only a couple days while he traveled to Mandalore and dealt with Maul and Savage. On Coruscant he had Sate Pestage and Mas Amedda to cover for him. Both were aware Palpatine was the Sith Lord and in cahoots with him. Palpatine was not in the Senate every day, and doubtless had mountains of paper work to deal with when he wasn't... so it's easy enough for them to say "The Chancellor is a very busy man, perhaps he can meet with you later" to anyone who tries to see him while he's not there.
