In the episode "Eminence" [link](episode) Darth Maul and Savage Opress join forces with Death Watch. Maul pulls of a string of surprisingly effective ploys, ending with a large army for Death Watch, funded by the Black Sun and Pyke spice dealers as well as bullying the Hutts into surrendering some space lanes.

I am glad Maul killed Vizsla. Really don't like him...
Vizsla seems to have "warrior" confused with "warlord." The Mandalorians were always awesome warriors with their own distinct code of honor... Vizsla was a murdering self important terrorist just in love with killing for the sake of killing. Satine's philosophy may have been flawed... but Mandalore seemed to be doing very well with neutrality and pacifism. Vizsla thought it would ruin them... so he himself arranged to ruin them so he could save them. Just seems a little hypocritical for a guy who claims to have "honor." Oh, and he shot an unarmed little girl just to prove how tough he was. Screw him.
Maul knows he's bad. He doesn't pretend to be anything else. And I love him for it.

In my opinion, I think this episode is proof that Maul was originally suppose to be the leader of the Separatists before he got cut in half.

I don't think so; there's now way he could have concealed his sith identity because of the way he looks. Plus I seriously doubt he could do the whole diplomacy/Separatist Parliament thing that Dooku does. I bet Sidious never really planned for Maul to be more than an assassin. If his looks were a non-issue, and if he could do things in a not so brutal way, then Maul would have been perfect. He is a natural leader. Just not for the separatists as a whole. He would only have been able to command the armies, like Grievous or Ventress did.

Cept his tattoos were ret-conned into being not sith but nightbrother markings. Dooku may have charisma... but considering the seperatist weren't exactly motivated beyond anything but greed, bloodlust, or vendettas, I think Maul could have convinced/scared them into following him. It wouldn't be like Maul trying to get the humanocentric Imperial remnant to rally behind him, let's face it he blends right in with all the other freaky looking separatists, no real uniformity among their species.
I used to think they killed off Maul just to come up with new characters to sell more toys... but I think they would have been able to sell more by keeping Maul alive and giving him different outfits, kids certainly think he's cooler than Dooku. Now I think you're probably right that Maul was intended just to be an assassin and not a mastermind (though I'm glad we're seeing now that he is!), he didn't get much of any character development, but I think that was intentional since he was just a nameless assassin working for a secret villain... a sort of "phantom menace" if you will.

Meh, the tattoo retcons don't bother me. Most retcons don't (I'm not a huge fan of the overall EU). Oh, I completely agree that Maul would have worked well with the seperatist army and the trade federation, but he could never have fulfilled the role Dooku does as the head of the Separatist Parliament. He couldn't have been a politician for the Seppies as well as their military leader, because of how he looks. It's practically a dead give away to not trust him

There would have had to have been a puppet leader that he controlled, like what they're doing with the Mandalore arc right now. I agree that seeing him as a mastermind now is fantastic. It would make sense that he is, considering who his former master is

Hmm, I suppose. Perhaps he could have filled Grievous' role. People actually theorized that Grievous was actually Maul's remains in a cyborg suit for a while... that might've been cool.
Still, I don't think Maul's looks really would have been an issue given what most of the other separatist leaders looked like.

Oh yeah, he could have easily taken Grievous's role. I still think he looks too much like a demon to have any chance in the Parliament. Remember, the Trade Federation and the other aliens that head the Separatist Council from Episode 2 are never revealed to the actual populace to be in charge. The average citizen thinks it's all Dooku, and not Nute Gunray, Wat Tambor, Shu Mai or any of the others.

Yeah, alright. Since I suppose Sidious was pulling the strings behind the scenes without the Separatists knowing... until ROTS... I don't know, the Separatist plot is a bit convoluted and run by idiots...
Yeah, Maul could have and should have filled Grievous' role.

I'm glad he didn't fulfill Grievous's role in the film because then I wouldn't have this team up in the show.
